Bird Themed Nursery Part 1: Quilt

Birds are a part of nature that brings us song, happiness, and peacefulness, making them a wonderful theme to use for the nursery. I've always wanted to create a bird themed nursery (gender neutral) and paint a tree in the room. Since I got my sewing machine at the beginning of the summer, I've been inspired to create my own nursery bedding. I want the bedding to be one of a kind, not a mass produced bedding set bought at Babies R Us. However, bird print fabric was NOT easy to find! My mom and I were on the hunt and went to several fabric stores before we finally found the fabric that spoke to my heart, fabric that would one day adorn my baby's nursery, fabric that would be carried around the house as her "security blanket."

The rag a throw quilt I wanted to make called for 5 coordinating fabrics. I got polka dots, checks, stripes, flowers and BIRDS!!!

First, I cut 12 10x10 squares of each print, drew these lines as a guide and sewed each square back to back following the diagonals.

Then, I sewed 5 squares together to create a row leaving a 1 inch seam.

Here is the back side of the row with the seams which will turn into fringe.

Next, I sewed the rows together.

The sewing part really didn't take too long.

Here is the back side of the quilt. Time to cut those seams to create fringe!

After I cut all the seams, I washed the quilt to create this fluffy fringe.

I followed Green Apple Orchard's simple tutorial!

Stay tuned to find out how I incorporate this branch into the nursery!

  1. Bird theme...yes, gender neutral. But a pink quilt is not! Let's hope you have a girl! :) Great job on the quilt! -Kellye

  2. Haha! The painting on the wall has to be gender neutral since that will be staying for multiple children. (I want to paint a tree with birds.) The bedding can be changed out. Once I finish my little girl's bedding set, I'll start one for our son. ;)
